Of California's 100 million acres, more than 60 percent of it is classified as rangeland. In San Luis Obispo County, 93 percent of its two million acres is rangeland (UC
Davis). As society places an ever-increasing value upon these rangelands as wildlife habitat and open space, a greater number of professionals are needed to manage these lands.
The following are examples of some organizations that have job openings
related to the area of rangeland resources. Currently, individuals
are being sought who possess skills in, but are not limited to, the
following areas:
- Providing guidance and technical advice in the area of water resources
- Assisting with multiple-use management
- Processing grazing applications, crossing permit applications, transfers, and grazing case file updates
- Conducting range studies, including range inventories, forage use, and range trend analysis

- Coordinating projects throughout the state which focus on range and riparian management
- Completionof case studies including water and forage quality monitoring

- Conservation of critical wetlands and restoration of marsh habitats
- Planning and preparation for rangeland and wetland projects
- Capability of surveying, overseeing construction management, and contract administration on wetland, riparian and associated upland habitat restoration projects

- Inventory, analyze, improve, protect, utilize, and manage the natural resources of rangelands and related grazing lands
- Develop cooperative relations with range users, assist landowners to plan and apply rangeland management programs, and develop technical standards and specifications

- Monitoring range allotments for compliance with management plans, including season of use, numbers of livestock, herding procedures, salting, range improvement and maintenance
- Inspection of structural range improvements and notification to supervisors of needed maintenance Development of overall ecosystem based range management programs
