The meat industry is the science and business of producing wholesome, quality and nutritious meat and meat products for consumers. The industry is made up of three segments: fresh, which includes harvest and fresh meat processing; manufacture, which includes the manufacture of further processed meat products; support, which includes equipment, ingredients, chemicals, packaging materials and services.
The industry draws upon and incorporates many fields of study such as management, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, sales and marketing. There are many facets of the meat industry. Today, food safety is driving many new jobs. As the industry grows, every year jobs go unfilled. Opportunities in the meat industry involve all the sciences and is one of the fastest changing of the food industries.
