students have made Cal Poly’s animal science department a one-of-a-kind
place in the United States. The department’s program is steeped
in tradition, and founded on the unique hands-on, learn-by-doing
educational philosophy, which brings relevance to the educational
process and leads to student retention.
The flexibility of the program’s curriculum provides the basis
for students to learn, understand and apply the principles of science
and technology to unlimited career opportunities in hundreds of different
fields. In this technology-driven world, the animal science curriculum
best prepares students to successfully respond to and integrate the
rapid changes in science and technology with societal, economic and
cultural changes that are occurring. The major provides excellent
preparation for students who will take a position in animal-related
industries upon graduation, as well as those entering veterinary
